Rescue Readers Book Series and Management System

Home School Collection for Mentors

Download the quick assessment to determine whether your student would benefit from the Rescue Reader© books and the phonemic awareness, spelling, and magnetic letter activities.

Rescue Readers© are true stories of rescued dogs and cats that delight learners with humor and engaging pictures.  Students from Michigan to Texas have benefited from these books and activities, which provide several exposures to tricky vowel combinations.  These must be learned to ensure to successful long-word decoding, which is a prerequisite for faster oral reading.

Rescue Readers© were written by Diane Karlis, a reading consultant for the Portage Public Schools in Portage, Michigan.  Diane has been teaching beginning reading for over 30 years, and she wrote these books out of dissatisfaction with books that were merely “phonics readers.”
